US, Taliban agree to reduce violence in Afghanistan, to sign peace deal

The US and Taliban have agreed to a weeklong reduction in violence in Afghanistan. Upon successful implementation of the reduction in violence, the two sides will then sign a deal on February 29, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. The peace deal is aimed at ending nearly two decades of conflict.

29-yr-old Wuhan doctor, who delayed wedding for work, dies of coronavirus

Peng Yinhua, a 29-year-old doctor who delayed his wedding to continue working from a Wuhan hospital in China, has died from coronavirus. Peng, a respiratory acute care medical professional at First People's Hospital, had contracted the infection there while working on the "front line". Peng was admitted to hospital on January 25 and his condition had worsened by January 30.

China denies delay in granting permission to Indian flight to Wuhan

China has denied any delay in allowing a special Indian flight to deliver medical supplies and evacuate remaining Indians from the coronavirus-hit city of Wuhan. "The competent departments on the two sides are still in communication on the arrangement for the remaining 80 people that India plans to fly home," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

India asks Oxford museum to return 'stolen' bronze statue

Indian government has asked Ashmolean Museum in Oxford to return a 15th-century bronze idol that was apparently stolen from a temple in 1960s. The Indian high commission in London said a formal request for restitution of the statue of Saint Thirumangai Alvar was made last Friday. The sculpture, almost one metre tall, depicts Thirumangai Alvar holding a sword and shield.

A human brain inside a jar was seized by the US authorities at the US-Canada border in Michigan. It was found inside a shipment labelled "Antique Teaching Specimen". The package was being transported in a Canadian mail truck from Toronto and was going towards Wisconsin, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said.

Israel confirms 1st coronavirus case in returnee from Japan cruise ship

An Israeli woman, who was on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan, has tested positive for the coronavirus after returning home, the country's health ministry said. This is Israel's first confirmed case of coronavirus. Along with her, 10 other passengers flew home last week and they all tested negative for the virus.

Chinese envoy Li Bijian said that it's a good decision by Pakistan to not evacuate over 1,000 Pakistani students from China's Hubei province, which is under lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. The evacuees were being brought to the hospital in Novi Sanzhary in the central Poltava region where they will be held in quarantine for 14 days. Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has thanked India for "fully supporting" the country's democratic process after India congratulated him for his re-election. India remains committed to working with the new government in the fight against "sponsored terrorism", the Ministry of External Affairs said. Ghani won 50.64% votes as per the poll results announced by the Independent Election Commission.

Over 7,000 Indian-origin people held last year for trying to enter US

At least 7,720 Indian-origin people including 272 women and 591 juveniles were arrested between October 2018 and September 2019 for trying to cross into the US illegally, official figures revealed. Over 8.5 lakh people were held during the same period, the highest total in 12 years. This was a 115% increase from the October 2017-September 2018 period.
