India Reports Biggest Single-Day Jump in Coronavirus Death Toll, Lockdown Extended Till May 17 as COVID-19 Count Reaches 35,365

New Delhi, May 1: The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 35,365 on Friday. The country reported 1,755 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. Since Thursday evening, 77 people have lost their lives due to the deadly virus, which the highest number of deaths reported in a single day. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, COVID-19 has claimed 1,152 lives until now. Amid rising coronavirus cases in the country, the Ministry of Home Affairs extended the lockdown for two more weeks till May 17.  Lockdown Extended in India Till May 17: Flights, Tains, Inter-State Road Travel Remains Shut; Know What is Open And Shut, Allowed And Disallowed in Red, Orange And Green Zones.
In the past 24 hours, 693 people have recovered from coronavirus, taking the total number of recovered cases to 9,065. As per the ministry, there are currently 25,148 active coronavirus cases in India. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state. In this western state of India, the number of COVID-19 patients crossed 10,000-mark. Till now, 10,498 people have contracted coronavirus in Maharashtra, out which 1,773 have recovered, and 459 people have lost their lives.

In Gujarat, the number of COVID-19 cases has reached 4,395. The deadly virus claimed 214 lives in this state. More than 600 people have recovered in Gujarat. In Delhi also, coronavirus cases increased to 3,515 on Friday. Fifty-nine deaths were reported in the national capital territory. Lockdown in India Extended For Further 2 Weeks Beyond May 4, MHA Gives Details Of What Will Remain Open And Shut in Red, Orange And Green Zones.
The government took the decision to extend the lockdown after a comprehensive review. The Union Home Ministry issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, on Friday to further extend the lockdown for a further period of two weeks beyond May 4. The Ministry also issued new guidelines to regulate different activities in this period, based on the risk profiling of the districts of the country into Red (hotspot), Green and Orange Zones. The guidelines have permitted considerable relaxation in the districts falling in the Green and Orange Zones.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 declared a 21-day countrywide lockdown for the first time to break the chain of transmission of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The restriction was extended on April 14 for another 17 days as the COVID-19 cases continued to rise.
