The corona news of Tuesday April 21: reading in one minute

Press conference
All eyes were on tonight. Prime Minister Mark Rutte addressed the Netherlands and announced how we will continue after April 28.

Deaths and hospitalizations
The  number of reports of deceased persons  as a result of the coronavirus has increased by 165 to 3916 in the past 24 hours, the RIVM reported this afternoon. In addition, 118 reports were received from people who were or have been hospitalized. That number rises to 9897. The number of deaths in particular is considerably more than yesterday (then 67), but that is explainable because many deaths from the weekend are only reported on Monday. These will then be reported in Tuesday's update. Compared to the past few weeks, the number of reports of deaths and hospital admissions on 'the second day after the weekend' this week is relatively low.

The number of Dutch  corona patients in intensive care  has fallen by 71. There are now 1087 people on IC, the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) reported earlier today. Yesterday the counter was still at 1158 and Sunday at 1176. So the decline continues. In the coming weeks, a new start must be made slowly with regular care.

2.5 million infections worldwide
More than 2.5 million people around the world have now been infected with the coronavirus, as reported today at 3pm on  Worldometer.info . According to the website, 2,503,067 people had become infected at that time, 22,564 more than yesterday. Worldometer recorded 171,747 deaths and 659,106 healings.

Belgium most affected
Belgium has registered 170 new deaths in the past 24 hours. Since April 12, there has been a slight decrease in the number of deaths. In total, 5,998 people have died in Belgium from the virus. The number of confirmed infected corona patients rose in Belgium with 973 newly diagnosed cases to 40,956. The coronavirus is severely affecting our southern neighbors. According to the latest figures, the Belgians are the most affected per 100,000 inhabitants  of all countries .

Everything you need to know about the coronavirus

The government must further elaborate the plans for a corona app, Ron Roozendaal, director of information policy at the Ministry of Health,  told the House of Representatives today.

Seven proposals were tested last weekend, but there was a lot of criticism, including from the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the ICT Assessment Office, the Board of Human Rights and the national lawyer. For example, it was not clear how the privacy of users is protected and why such an app is needed at all. Because of these comments, it is now necessary, according to Roozendaal, to tighten 'the epidemiological requirements of digital support'.

Stay at home
The motto is still: stay at home as much as possible. Only go outside for work when working from home is not possible, for groceries or to take care of others. You can get a breath of fresh air, but don't do this in a group. Always keep a distance from others (at least 1.5 meters). In families where one member has a fever, everyone stays at home.
