The current April drought is worse than in the previous two years
The hydrometeorological situation in the Czech Republic is worse in April than in the same period in the previous two years, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) said in a report on Sunday. If water availability does not improve, agriculture will be negatively affected.
At the end of the winter season there was three times less water in the mountains than in the previous year, CHMI said. Repeated lack of snow at lower altitudes significantly deepens the drought. The melting snow brought far less water to the underground and to the river streams.
The groundwater is thus at a strongly subnormal level and is thus at its worst level since mid-April since 2018. According to meteorologists, the current situation in previous years was at the same level only at the end of April.
In rivers the water level is below average, only in mountainous areas is it close to normal. Due to higher temperatures the soil drought is spreading. Meteorologists have noticed very little moisture in central and eastern Bohemia and in southern and central Moravia. Wild vegetation including trees is endangered.
“If the water shortage continues in the coming weeks, negative impacts on agricultural production can be expected,” the CHMI report said.
